Our Australian Blue Mussels benefit from the nutrient rich upwellings of the Great Southern Ocean that flows into the Spencer Gulf region. Blue mussels are filter feeders, taking in the nutrients and rich phytoplankton in the water – making their flavours and characteristics unique to the region where they are grown.

Premium mussels for any season

At the start of the season in June, our mussels are typically ‘petite’ with 60-70 pieces per kilo and a meat to shell ratio of nearly 50 per cent. As the harvest year continues, the mussels grow in size to 30-35 pieces per kilo by March.

At Eyre Peninsula Seafoods, we make sure that the mussel meat to shell ratio remains high throughout the season, and importantly that we always deliver an excellent eating mussel.

Sustainably sourced in nature

Mussels are one of the most sustainable foods you can buy. And in plentiful supply all year round, they’ll make a dinner time favourite… no matter the season.

Unlike most seafood options, mussels actually improve the marine environment even as they grow. That’s because they are natural filter-feeders. Every day, a mussel filters through 20 litres of seawater, essentially cleaning the water around it as it goes.

And because our mussels are rope-grown, they sit just below the water’s surface, staying well away from the natural vegetation and wildlife. It also helps to improve their flavour and quality as the mussels are kept off the seafloor – so they are virtually grit and sand free.

Innovative mussel farming practices

The way we farm our mussels makes all the difference… in size, flavour and condition. We farm wild caught spat (baby mussels) and use New Zealand long line technology, allowing the mussels to grow in the water from 2–20 metres below the surface. Being well off the seafloor, they are always clean and healthy.

Using traditional husbandry techniques and the latest technology, we have developed a unique farming and handling method which exclusively produces small, soft mussels characterised by their rich, creamy texture and incredibly sweet flavour.

Fresher for longer

Our mussels are graded and cooled prior to heading to Port Lincoln for processing. As they travel through the factory, every mussel passes through four levels of quality assessment, being graded, scrubbed, cleaned and debearded so they are literally ‘pot-ready’ when they land in your shopping basket.

Our SeaSure packaging was developed for the protection of the live mussels. By minimising the stress the mussel endures from water to plate, we consistently deliver a premium eating mussel.
