What is BAP certification?

Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) is the only certification program in the world that endorses every step of the production chain… and we are the only Australian mussel farmers to hold this certification.

Certification by BAP illustrates EP Seafoods’ commitment to the four pillars of sustainability:

  • Environmental responsibility

  • Animal health and welfare

  • Food safety

  • Social accountability.

Responsible seafood production is a global effort to keep fish in our future. BAP certification is transforming the seafood industry in 39 countries and EP Seafoods is proud to lead the way in the Australian market.

The investments we have made in our sustainable farming practices and state-of-the-art processing facilities ensure we remain Australia’s leading farming and processing operation for the finest quality Australian grown mussels.

We continue to develop our farming practices to meet quality and demand

EP Seafoods has advocated for sustainable Australian seafood farming for over two decades. We are the first mussel farm and processing facility to introduce the water to plate process. This system ensures we grow and harvest our mussels with the utmost integrity and care, keeping a close eye on the environmental impact and ensuring the waters remain clean and free of contaminants. Once harvested, our Boston Bay Kinkawooka mussels receive royal treatment. Covered in ice and with an extra dose of seawater, they’re immediately shipped to our nearby processing facility.

We grade, scrub, debeard and clean every mussel before packaging them in our SeaSure packaging. They receive a dose of oxygen-saturated water to keep them in a simulated water environment for the trip to the supermarket or specialty store. It is our attention to the environment, animal welfare, food safety and social accountability that earnt our BAP certification status.

Why is BAP certification so important?

BAP is the only third-party aquaculture certification program encompassing the entire production chain, including the processing plant, farm, hatchery and feed mill.

Sustainable and healthy approaches to feeding the world’s growing population are more critical now than ever. By 2030, 62% of all seafood produced for human consumption will come from aquaculture.

EP Seafoods is always looking for ways to continually improve our operations and ensure a sustainable industry that keeps the environment and seafood quality at the top of the priority list. Receiving BAP certification validates our investments into sustainable and best practices. It enables EP Seafoods to be part of a movement that aligns with our pillars and ensures scientific and educated checks and balances for the future of global seafood production.
